The Caribbean is every snorkeler's dream come true. Warm, turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life make the Caribbean one of the world's top snorkeling destinations.

For cruise travelers, a shore excursion offers the perfect way to explore these underwater wonders up close, transforming an ordinary cruise into an unforgettable adventure. The excellent visibility, often exceeding 100 feet (30 meters), gives you an unobstructed view of the vibrant coral reefs, schools of tropical fish, and other marine life.

Personally, as someone who’s been fortunate enough to snorkel in destinations all around the world, the Caribbean will always be my favorite place to don a mask and snorkel. As I get older even the difference of a few degrees will have me climbing out of the water sooner and there’s nothing like being able to explore the underwater world free of a clingy wetsuit.

From parrotfish and sea turtles to nurse sharks and graceful rays, there’s no telling which VIPs of the underwater world you'll meet. Top Snorkeling Destinations in the Caribbean

Belize – Great Blue Hole & Barrier Reef

Belize is a true snorkeling gem, and its famous Great Blue Hole is a must-see. This massive underwater sinkhole surrounds a vibrant coral reef teeming with marine life. It’s one of those bucket-list spots that every snorkeler should experience at least once. 

But don’t worry—if the idea of a giant sinkhole seems intimidating, you don’t have to dive into the deep end. The surrounding shallow areas around the rim of the Blue Hole offer plenty of incredible snorkeling opportunities.

The Belize Barrier Reef, part of the larger Mesoamerican Reef system, is another top choice. You can swim alongside nurse sharks, rays, and colorful tropical fish here. Typically, organized tours provide all the gear you need (snorkel, mask, fins) and take about 4–5 hours, giving you ample time to explore the underwater world. Watch for the vibrant coral gardens—they’re stunning!

Pro Tip: If snorkeling for the first time, consider starting with a guided tour. They’ll provide helpful tips so you won’t mistake a friendly parrotfish for a shark! Even if you’re not a newbie, sticking with a guide will help you get the most out of the experience. Guides often have a keen eye for marine life. On one trip, I had no idea I was floating right above a manta ray until my guide pointed it out!

Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is a top snorkeling destination, especially popular with cruise travelers. The island's clear waters make it ideal for spotting marine life.

Living near Cozumel, Palancar Reef is my go-to.  Here you can glide over coral formations and spot school after school of bright fish.

Another must-visit is El Cielo—aptly named "The Heaven"—where you can snorkel in crystal-clear water and see dozens of starfish resting on the sandy bottom. It’s a surreal experience!

Quick Tip: You can easily combine the two into one epic half-day trip on this tour that’s usually my go-to when I have visitors. A combo tour usually runs for around 4 hours, and most will pick you up directly from your cruise port, making things super convenient.

Roatán, Honduras

Roatán is a hidden gem for snorkeling enthusiasts. It's also located along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and the water here is incredibly clear so it’s easy to spot angelfish, parrotfish, sea turtles, and even the occasional eagle ray.

West Bay Beach is one of the top spots where you can step off the shore and surround yourself with coral gardens. And when I say step offshore, there are some spots where the distance between you and the reef is within a couple of strokes.

Many shore excursions take you to even more secluded spots so you’ll avoid the crowds and get the best experience possible. If you’re a cruise traveler, you’ll find that Roatán is a breeze to explore. Most excursions will pick you up right at the port and provide everything you need, from gear to a guide.

Insider Tip: Bring a rash guard or lightweight long-sleeve shirt. The sun is strong, and you’ll want to protect your skin, especially since many reef-safe sunscreens are only partially effective when you’re in the water for a long time.

Grand Cayman – Stingray City

Stingray City in Grand Cayman is one of the most unique snorkeling experiences in the Caribbean. Imagine standing in waist-deep, crystal-clear water while gentle stingrays glide around you—an unforgettable adventure! 

These southern stingrays are used to humans, and they’ll often swim right up to you, making it easy to interact with them. While I wouldn’t usually recommend interacting with wild animals, these gentle creatures genuinely seem to like a pat and research shows no harm.

Most excursions here also take you to Coral Gardens, where you can snorkel among colorful coral formations and schools of tropical fish. The tours typically last around 2–3 hours, so you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the stingrays and get some quality snorkeling.

St.Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

St. Thomas is a favorite among cruise passengers, and it’s easy to see why—it offers some of the best and most accessible snorkeling spots in the Caribbean. Coki Beach is a top pick, with its calm, clear waters and abundant tropical fish. You don’t have to swim far from the shore to be surrounded by vibrant marine life, making it ideal for beginners or families with kids.

Another fantastic option is Trunk Bay, located on nearby St. John (a quick ferry ride away). This beach offers a unique underwater snorkeling trail with markers that guide you through different coral formations and fish species. Most shore excursions will include transportation, snorkeling gear, and sometimes lunch, so all you need to do is show up and enjoy.

Helpful Tip: Trunk Bay can get crowded when multiple cruise ships are in port, so try to book an early excursion to beat the crowds and enjoy the reef at its best.

Best Shore Excursions for Snorkeling in the Caribbean

Now, let’s talk about the logistics. When it comes to snorkeling shore excursions, you’ve got options. Guided snorkeling trips can be tailored to different experience levels, from complete beginners to seasoned snorkelers. These excursions include gear, a guide, and transportation. Some even throw in snacks and drinks! 

You’ll usually get about 2–4 hours of snorkeling, which is plenty to see the underwater sights. Plus, having a guide means you’ll get insider tips on the best spots and safety advice so you can focus on enjoying the experience.

On the flip side, renting gear and heading to a beach independently is also an option if you’re an experienced snorkeler and want to explore at your own pace. It’s often cheaper, but ensure you have a transportation plan and understand the local water conditions.

Pro Tip: Booking excursions through the cruise line might be more convenient, but independent tours sometimes offer smaller groups and a more personalized experience. Just be sure to check reviews and make sure the operator is reputable!

• Beginners should go for a guided tour. You’ll get help with the basics; they usually provide high-quality gear. Plus, having an expert guide makes you more likely to spot cool things you might otherwise miss!
• If you’re more experienced, look for tours that visit multiple snorkeling spots or give you more time in the water. It’s worth paying a bit more for those extended tours—you’ll get more out of your day.
• Check if the excursion offers extras like underwater photos, snacks, or a chance to stop at a beach afterward. Little add-ons can make the day even more memorable.

Pack Smart:

• Bring an underwater camera if you’ve got one—seriously, you’ll regret it if you don’t capture those sea turtles or stingrays up close.
• If you’ll be visiting multiple beaches on your trip, consider investing in your own gear. Using a mask and snorkel you know fits well is more comfortable and you won’t waste time adjusting it.
